Roughly 2 billion individuals and tens of millions of enterprises around the world lack access to basic financial services. In Uganda-for the 65% of poor households who are “unbanked,” this represents an incredible economic barrier that prevents them from accessing the credit, savings and insurance services essential to the well-being of their families and businesses.
The global community and the Sustainable Development Goals are increasingly getting aware of the critical role financial inclusion plays in reducing poverty, promoting economic prosperity and catalyzing enterprises, and has made notable strides in promoting access to finance around the world. However, large scale innovation is still needed to ensure products; services and capital are available, accessible and appropriate to the needs of underrepresented individuals like youth enterprises and communities. From our Annual Youth Skills development expo programme, we have realized that youth have different growing enterprises and now the gaps are capacity development and access to affordable micro-finance. Having to support youth groups in their localities to identify and use the localy available resources in their areas, we now want to scale this up to at least 20 youth groups per annum. This approach aims at complementing Government’s Youth Livelihood Programme and it is unique in that those youth who are crawling can walk, walking can run, running can splinter and fly!!
GROUP4GROWTH applies a holistic peer to peer approach to support productive and proactive youth to access both capacity development and micro-finance. It is on the above backdrop that YOUTH ADVOCACY FOUNDATION UGANDA-YAFU and our esteemed partner like you, appreciate the role of youth in being the solution to bridge the employment gap and that together we scale up the GROUP4GROWTH.For 2016-2017/2018, Different innovative youth have been identified in industries like:
- 1.Construction i.e building houses using plastic bottles, using waste car tyres for roofing!!, kavera and egg shells as material for tiles!!
- 2.Tourism i.e art and crafts, shoe making, cottages.
- 3.ICT- developing different applications to address community challenges
- 4.Agriculture i.e value addition and agri-business chains, piggery, Poultry.
